So, Friday afternoon around 3:00, one of the other secretaries on my team ("team" = the three other secretaries, one other paralegal, two partners and about 12 associate attorneys I work with) asked me if I wanted to share a cab with her that night. For what? I had no idea. She said we have a last-minute team meeting, and we were supposed to be at the Sears Tower at 5 p.m.
Kind of crazy, right? So we all show up there at 5 p.m., the two partners take us up to some fancy conference room (with fancy European sparkling water) and tell us that they're breaking off from the old firm and forming their own - and they want all of us to join them. Apparently the other partners at the old firm, along with the office manager, already knew the situation - we could stay on there if wanted, but frankly, I don't know what we would have to do, since all our attorneys would be gone!
Thus, my new job - working for the same people, only now it'll be on the 44th floor of the Sears tower rather than on LaSalle Street. Same salary, same insurance, etc. I'm sure it'll be great - but I'll miss a lot of people I worked with at the old firm, and this was all just totally shocking! As in, no one except the two partners involved had any clue this was happening. Crazy.
I was supposed to be going into the old firm tomorrow morning to get my stuff, officially put in my two weeks' notice, etc., but one of the partners called earlier tonight and said we should all just stay home tomorrow, then show up at the new place at our normal starting time on Tuesday. So, free day off! I could use it ... I didn't get nearly enough cleaning done this weekend.
